How to Refer a Friend to Octopus Energy (Step by Step)

This is the half of the scheme almost nobody writes about, because most pages ranking for it are trying to sign you up rather than help you refer someone. If you are already with Octopus, here is the whole process.

1. Find your link. Log in to the app or the web dashboard and scroll a little way down the home screen. Your personal link is there in the share.octopus.energy/word-word-number format. You get one as soon as your own switch completes, even before your own joining credit has landed.
2. Send it to the person switching. Message, email, group chat, whatever suits. There is no form to fill in on your side and nothing to register with Octopus first.
3. Make sure they start from the link. This is the step that goes wrong. They need to click your link and begin their quote from there. Going to Octopus directly, or through a comparison site, means the referral never attaches and neither of you gets paid.
4. Wait for their first direct debit. The payment clearing is what releases both credits, not the switch completing.

• Failed first direct debit. The trigger event is the payment clearing, not the switch. Sort the payment, the credit follows.

About Those "£80" and "£100" Referral Sites

Search this topic and you will find anonymous sites, and a Facebook page or two, advertising £80 or even £100 for switching to Octopus. Read the small print: Octopus pays £50 each for home referrals, no more. What these sites do is promise to send you £30 or £50 of their own referral earnings by PayPal after your switch completes.

Sometimes they pay. Often they do not, and because Octopus has nothing to do with that side arrangement, there is zero comeback when the money never arrives. You have handed a stranger your switch details for an IOU.

My advice: take the standard £50 through a link from a real, named person, whether that is someone you know or a site like this one where you can see exactly who runs it. If a deal on the referral itself sounds better than what Octopus officially pays, someone is making it up.

Who qualifies: sole traders with premises billed as non-domestic, limited companies of any size, and charities, all switching to an Octopus business account. The £75 attaches per account that switches, not per meter or per site. And any Octopus customer can be the referrer: you do not need a business account yourself.

Two claims you will see elsewhere that are out of date:

1. "The business referral pays £100." It did previously. Octopus moved the rate to £75 each, and its refer-a-business page states the current terms: £150 to share between you, £75 for you and £75 for them.
2. "Businesses must send the code by email or phone." Octopus's own business referral help article says referring a business works the same as referring any customer: you share your personal link.
