What Is Hostinger?

Hostinger is a web hosting company founded in 2004, headquartered in Lithuania. It now hosts over 3 million websites worldwide, with data centres across Europe, the US and Asia, including a UK data centre in London.

It is not a UK company, but it targets the UK market directly through hostinger.co.uk, with GBP pricing, UK-specific support availability and a local server option. For the purpose of this review, I am writing about the UK-facing product.

Hostinger is a shared hosting provider at its lower tiers, with cloud hosting and VPS available higher up. It is not a managed WordPress host in the same way as WP Engine or Kinsta, but it has WordPress-specific features built into every plan.

Hostinger Plans and Pricing in the UK

Hostinger's main shared hosting plans come in three tiers.

All plans include free SSL certificates, Cloudflare CDN and daily automated backups. Premium and Business plans add a free domain name for the first year of hosting.

The Premium plan is what I recommend for most small business owners. Single is too limited for anything beyond a personal site. Business adds resources that most sites will not need until they are seeing real traffic.

On pricing: Hostinger uses promotional introductory rates on longer-term plans. Exact prices change regularly, so check hostinger.co.uk for the current figures. What matters more than the headline price is the difference between the intro rate and the renewal rate.

The Renewal Cost: Read This Before You Buy

This is the most important section in this review.

Hostinger's introductory pricing is low because it is tied to a specific billing period. When that period ends, the plan renews at Hostinger's standard rate, which can be roughly three to four times the intro rate you paid.

To illustrate the scale of it: if you signed up on a 48-month plan at around £3 per month, you might find yourself renewing at £9 to £12 per month. Over a full year at the renewal rate, that is a meaningful increase in your running costs.

This is not a hidden fee. Hostinger shows the renewal price at checkout. But it is easy to focus on the headline intro price and overlook it.

My practical approach: lock in the longest available initial term (48 months where Hostinger offers it) to get the promotional rate for as long as possible. Set a calendar reminder 60 days before expiry to either renegotiate, renew with a fresh discount code, or move to another host.

If you are building a site that will still be running in five or more years and generating income, the ongoing renewal cost matters as much as the intro price. If you are testing a side project with an 18-month horizon, the intro rate represents excellent value.

Hostinger Performance in the UK

This is where Hostinger stands out at its price point.

LiteSpeed servers. Hostinger uses LiteSpeed Enterprise across all shared plans. LiteSpeed handles concurrent connections significantly faster than Apache, the default on many budget hosts. Combined with the LiteSpeed Cache plugin pre-installed on WordPress, page load times are consistently faster than you would expect from shared hosting at this price.

NVMe SSD storage. All plans use NVMe SSD rather than older SATA SSD. NVMe is roughly five to six times faster at reading data. For WordPress sites, this means quicker database queries and faster page assembly.

Cloudflare CDN. Included on all plans. Cloudflare serves static assets from edge servers closer to each visitor, reducing time to first byte for users in parts of the UK that are far from the main London data centre, and for any international visitors.

UK data centre. Hostinger has a London data centre. When you sign up via hostinger.co.uk, the UK location is the default. For a site whose visitors are mostly in the UK, a local server reduces latency compared to a host running on US or mainland European infrastructure.

On speed tests, Hostinger's time to first byte from UK locations typically comes in under 300ms on a fresh WordPress install. That is competitive with hosts charging two to three times as much per month.

Uptime. Hostinger claims 99.9% uptime with a service-level agreement. For most small business sites this is sufficient. If your site going down for 40 minutes a month would cost you significant revenue, a managed host with a stronger guarantee and 24/7 phone support is a better match.

WordPress and WooCommerce on Hostinger

For WordPress sites, Hostinger is a strong choice at its price point.

hPanel (Hostinger's control panel) includes a one-click WordPress installer, optional automatic core and plugin updates, the LiteSpeed Cache plugin pre-installed and a staging environment on Business plans.

For WooCommerce: small to medium stores (under 100 SKUs, under a few hundred orders a month) run well on the Business plan. For a store with high daily traffic or a complex product catalogue, I would move up to Hostinger's Cloud hosting tier or consider SiteGround's WooCommerce-optimised plans. The staging environment on Business plans is useful for testing updates before pushing to the live store, which matters for any site taking real orders.

Hostinger's Website Builder and Kodee AI

Hostinger includes a drag-and-drop website builder as an alternative to WordPress. In 2025 it added Kodee, an AI assistant available inside hPanel that can help generate website content, suggest layouts and answer common setup questions.

The website builder is functional for a basic site. If you are a complete beginner and want to avoid WordPress, it will get you online quickly. For anything beyond a five-page brochure site, I would recommend WordPress instead. The template quality is decent but does not match the design control you get with a well-configured WordPress theme.

Kodee is a helpful addition for common setup queries. It reduces the time spent searching for the right hPanel setting or troubleshooting a basic issue. I would not describe it as a significant reason to choose Hostinger over a competitor, but it is a useful quality-of-life feature.

How I Actually Use Hostinger

I use Hostinger for sites that are not yet generating revenue, where the hosting budget is a genuine constraint. Here is the honest version of what I've experienced.

What I like:

• Setup speed is hard to beat. WordPress is live in under five minutes from hPanel. For a client who wants to see a real working site quickly, that matters.
• LiteSpeed makes a noticeable difference on a fresh WordPress install. Sites with LiteSpeed Cache enabled consistently score well on Core Web Vitals without manual performance work.
• hPanel is the best control panel at this price point. It is cleaner and less overwhelming than cPanel and significantly easier to hand off to a non-technical client who needs to manage their own site.
• Free SSL and daily backups on every plan. Two items removed from the setup checklist, and reduced risk of losing content to a single bad plugin update.
• 24/7 live chat is responsive. I have used it for DNS-level questions and received technically capable responses rather than scripted deflection.

What is worth knowing:

• The renewal price jump is real. I have had clients surprised by the cost increase at renewal. I now tell them upfront: the intro rate is not the permanent rate, and here is what year five looks like.
• Shared hosting means shared resources. On busy days, or when a neighbouring site on the same server sees a traffic spike, load times can increase. It is infrequent but it does happen.
• No phone support. For non-technical clients who panic when something breaks, typing out the problem in chat adds friction. SiteGround's support team handles distressed non-technical clients more smoothly.
• WooCommerce on the lower tiers has limits. For anything beyond a simple shop, you need the Business plan as a minimum, and for a real-volume store you are looking at Cloud hosting or a managed WooCommerce host.

Who Should Look Elsewhere

Hostinger is not the right fit for every situation.

You need managed WordPress with staging and priority support. Look at SiteGround (my recommendation for client sites that earn money, see my SiteGround referral) or Kinsta. The renewal price difference disappears when you factor in the time saved on support calls.

You want a UK-based company. Hostinger is Lithuanian, not British. If a UK company address, UK phone support and UK data-controller relationships matter to your business, there are UK-native hosts to consider. I have not personally used 20i or Heart Internet, so I am not in a position to recommend them directly. They are worth researching if local data handling is a hard requirement for your sector.

You are running a high-volume WooCommerce store. Shared hosting has resource limits. A store processing 50 or more orders a day needs either Hostinger's Cloud hosting tier or a dedicated WooCommerce host.

You want a website builder as polished as Wix or Squarespace. Hostinger's builder is functional but is not at the same design level. If the builder is your main reason for considering Hostinger, Wix or Squarespace will give you a better experience, at a higher monthly cost.

Is Hostinger Safe?

Yes. Hostinger is an established, legitimate hosting provider with a long track record.
