Ad/affiliate disclosure: this post contains affiliate links. If you sign up through one I may receive a referral payment, at no extra cost to you and with no reduction to any bonus. I only recommend products I have used myself.

Monzo coral debit card and app on a desk, Monzo Business referral code £50 each side

Looking for a Monzo Business referral code? There isn't one, because Monzo doesn't use codes. It uses links, and mine is below.

£50 to you and £50 to me when you open a Monzo Business account, add money and make one card payment within 30 days. No minimum spend on that payment.

👉 Open my Monzo Business invite link

Enter your mobile number on that page before you download the app. That is the step that attaches the referral, and it cannot be added afterwards.

That "no minimum spend" line is the whole point of this page. Most UK business banking bonuses hang a spend target off the back of them, and the target is where people quietly fall out. Tide pays double at £100, but only once you have put £500 through the Tide card inside 90 days. Monzo asks for one card payment of any size inside 30 days. Buy a coffee with it and you have qualified.

They are different companies offering different accounts, so nothing stops you opening both and collecting both. That is what I did.

What the Monzo Business referral pays

The same link covers both Monzo account types, and what you get depends on which one you open:

You openYou getI get
Monzo Business£50£50
Personal current account£10£10

Both amounts are fixed. This matters, because Monzo's personal referral scheme is a random draw and the numbers are worse than the internet suggests: Monzo's own published table is £10 for 94% of people, £20 for 5% and £50 for 1%. Every page promising "up to £50 free with Monzo" is quoting a one-in-a-hundred outcome.

The business £50 has no randomness in it. It is the only version of this offer where the headline figure is the figure that lands in the account.

Who can open a Monzo Business account

Worth checking before you click anything, because Monzo's list of who it will not bank is longer than most people expect.

You can apply if you are:

  • A UK sole trader, or
  • The director of a registered limited company by shares (Ltd)
  • Based in the UK and aged 16 or over

If you are a limited company, it also needs to:

  • Have active status on Companies House, so no dormant companies
  • Have an active, undisqualified director on Companies House
  • Earn mostly from selling goods or services, rather than from interest or investment income
  • Be a UK tax resident and not a tax resident anywhere else

Monzo verifies anyone with significant control in the business at sign-up, so have those details to hand if there is more than one of you.

Monzo cannot open an account for these at all, whatever referral link you use:

  • Partnerships, including Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs)
  • Limited companies by guarantee
  • Charities and community interest companies (CICs)
  • Public limited companies (PLCs)
  • Clubs and other non-registered organisations
  • Trusts and funds
  • Unlimited companies, industrial and provident societies and Royal Charter bodies

If you are on that second list, no link fixes it and it is worth looking at Tide or Starling instead. Monzo's reasoning is that sole traders and limited companies are roughly 90% of UK businesses, so that is where it has focused.

One more: your business has to be based, registered and tax resident in the UK, and Monzo asks that you are physically in the UK and not on a VPN when you apply, so the application does not look like it is coming from abroad.

How to claim the £50, step by step

  1. Open join.monzo.com/c/mlk14vd on your phone and enter your mobile number on that page. Do this before you download anything.
  2. Choose the business account. Personal pays £10 through the same link, business pays £50.
  3. Apply and verify your identity. Sole traders need photo ID and a selfie. Limited companies get checked against Companies House.
  4. Add money. Monzo's terms say no minimum amount is required, so the "£1" every other page quotes is a safe floor rather than a rule.
  5. Make one card payment within 30 days. Any amount. Card, Apple Pay or Google Pay all count.
  6. Both sides get £50, usually within minutes of that payment clearing.

Apple Pay and Google Pay work the moment the account is approved, so you do not have to wait for the plastic card to arrive before qualifying.

The step that stops most bonuses paying

Step 1, every time.

Monzo attaches the referral at the invite page when the phone number goes in, not at sign-up. Download the app first, register, then go looking for where to enter a referral code, and there is nothing to enter and nothing support can do. It cannot be applied retrospectively, and that is the single most common reason people search for why their Monzo bonus never arrived.

Three other conditions worth knowing before you start:

  • ATM withdrawals, money transfers and virtual card transactions do not count as the qualifying payment. It has to be a real card payment for something.
  • You must never have had a Monzo account, and that includes having started an application you never finished.
  • The 30 days runs from the moment you enter your phone number on the invite page, not from when the account opens.

Monzo Business vs Tide: which bonus is worth more

The headline says Tide, at £100 against £50. The qualifying conditions say it is closer than that.

Monzo BusinessTide
Bonus£50 each side£100
What you must doOne card payment, any amount£500 of card spend
Time limit30 days90 days
Regulated asA bank (FSCS to £120,000)An EMI, funds held at ClearBank
Free planLite, freeFree, 20p per UK transfer

£500 of card spend in 90 days is nothing to a business buying stock or paying for ads. It is a real hurdle for a sole trader who pays most things by bank transfer, and card spend is exactly what that sort of business does least of.

So the honest answer is: if you know your card spend will clear £500, take Tide's £100. If you are not sure, £50 you are almost certain to receive beats £100 you might. And since these are two separate companies, opening both is a normal thing to do rather than a loophole. Full comparison at Tide vs Monzo Business vs Starling.

What Monzo Business costs

PlanPriceWhat you get
LiteFreeBusiness account, unlimited free UK bank transfers, Pots
Pro£9 a monthTax Pots, receipt scanning, invoicing, Xero, FreeAgent and QuickBooks integration
TeamFrom £25 a monthEmployee expense cards with limits and controls

The £50 pays out on the free Lite plan. There is no upgrade requirement attached to the bonus, so if the cash is why you are here, open Lite and stay on it.

Pro is worth it if you use the accounting integrations. If you do more than about 50 UK transfers a month, Monzo's free transfers on Lite already beat Tide's 20p per transfer before you get anywhere near the paid plans.

The three-a-month cap, for when you refer people yourself

Once you have the account, you get your own invite link, and there is a limit on it that Monzo does not advertise loudly:

Three referral rewards per calendar month, resetting on the 1st. That caps the whole scheme at £150 a month for a referrer, no matter how many people you send at it. Referrals past three still work, they just stop paying.

Two more rules on the referrer side:

  • You need to have held your business account for at least seven days before you can refer anyone.
  • No paid advertising. Monzo's terms let it withhold rewards where it suspects the offer is being gamed, and it names "paying for advertising to promote your link" as its example. So no Google Ads, no Meta ads, no boosted posts pointing at a Monzo link.

There is a separate trap if you end up holding both a business and a personal Monzo account, which I cover in the Monzo refer a friend guide: in that situation your personal-scheme referrals drop to a flat £5.

How I use Monzo Business

I run Glide Marketing, a UK marketing agency set up as a limited company, and I hold both Monzo Business and Tide. Two accounts at two different institutions is a setup I would recommend to most people running something small, for the boring reason: if one account is frozen or one provider has an outage, you can still pay people.

If you are only going to open one, the structural difference between them is the licence. Monzo Bank Ltd is a bank in its own right, so money sitting in a Monzo Business account is FSCS protected to £120,000. Tide is an electronic money institution rather than a bank, and holds customer funds at ClearBank. That is a sound arrangement, and it is a different one, so it is worth knowing which you are choosing.

I also hold a personal Monzo account alongside the business one, and that combination is what caps my own personal referrals at a flat £5. It has no effect on the business £50, which is the one worth having.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Monzo Business referral bonus?

£50 to the new customer and £50 to the referrer, fixed rather than random. It is credited within minutes of the new account's first qualifying card payment.

Is there a Monzo Business promo code?

No. Monzo does not use alphanumeric codes on any account. The scheme runs on links, and mine is join.monzo.com/c/mlk14vd. Codes advertised on voucher sites do not work for Monzo.

Do I have to spend a certain amount to qualify?

No, and that is what makes this one worth bothering with. One card payment of any size inside 30 days. Tide pays £100 but only after £500 of card spend in 90 days.

Can an LLP or a charity open a Monzo Business account?

No. Monzo cannot support partnerships and LLPs, limited companies by guarantee, charities, CICs, PLCs, clubs, trusts or funds. If you are one of those, no referral link helps because the account is not available to you.

Is Monzo Business free?

The Lite plan is free with unlimited UK bank transfers. Pro is £9 a month, Team starts at £25 a month. The £50 pays out on the free plan.

How many Monzo Business referrals can I make?

Three per calendar month, resetting on the 1st, so £150 a month at most. You also need to have held the account for seven days before referring anyone.

Why didn't my Monzo Business bonus arrive?

Almost always because the referral was never attached. It attaches when the new customer enters their mobile number on the invite page, before sign-up, and it cannot be applied to an account afterwards.

Can I get the bonus if I already have a personal Monzo account?

No. The reward is restricted to people who have never held a Monzo account and have never started an application.

Is Monzo Business a real bank?

Yes. Monzo Bank Ltd holds a full UK banking licence, FRN 730427, and eligible deposits are FSCS protected to £120,000. Tide is an EMI rather than a bank, which is the main structural difference between the two.

Ready to claim your £50?

Open the link, enter your mobile number on that page, then apply:

Open my Monzo Business invite link

Add money, make one card payment within 30 days, and £50 lands on both sides.

If Monzo cannot bank your business type, or you would rather have the bigger bonus and know your card spend will clear £500, Tide pays £100 with code JJ2WDY. Still weighing them up? Tide vs Monzo Business vs Starling puts all three side by side, and how to choose a UK business bank account walks through the trade-offs that are not about sign-up cash.
